THE WHITE BIRDS

--by: W.B. Yeats

WOULD that we were, my beloved, white birds on the foam of the sea!

We tire of the flame of the meteor, before it can fade and flee;

And the flame of the blue star of twilight, hung low on the rim of the sky,

Has awakened in our hearts, my beloved, a sadness that may not die.

A weariness comes from those dreamers, dew-dabbled, the lily and rose;

Ah, dream not of them, my beloved, the flame of the meteor that goes,

Or the flame of the blue star that lingers hung low in the fall of the dew:

For I would we were changed to white birds on the wandering foam: I and you!

I am haunted by numberless islands, and many a Danaan shore,

Where Time would surely forget us, and Sorrow come near us no more;

Soon far from the rose and the lily, and fret of the flames would we be,

Were we only white birds, my beloved, buoyed out on the foam of the sea!

流星尚未陨逝,我们已厌倦了它的闪耀;

露湿的百合、玫瑰梦里逸出一丝困倦;

在那里岁月会以遗忘我们,悲哀不再来临;

THE SOURCE

The sleep that on baby's eyes,does anybody know from where it comes? Yes,there is a rumorthat it has its dwelling where,in the fairy village among shadows of the forest dimly lit withglowworms, there hang two shy buds of enchantment.From there it comes to kiss baby's eyes.

The smile that flickers on baby's lips when he sleeps,does anybody know from where it born?Yes,

there is a rumor that a young soft beam of a crescent moon toucheed the edge of a vanishingautumn cloud,and there the smile was first born in the dream of a dew-washing morning—thesmile that flickers on bady's lips when he sleeps.

The sweet,soft freshness that blooms on baby's limbs—does anybody know where it washidden so long?

Yes,when the mother was a young girl it lay pervading her heart in tender and slient mysteryof love —the sweet,soft freshness that has bloomed on baby's limbs.

Sweet love,renew thy force,be it not said

Thy edge should blunter be than appetite,

Which but to—day by feeding is allay'd,

To—morrow sharpen'd in his former might;

So,love,be thou;although to—day thou fill

Thy hungry eyes even till they wink with fulness,

To—morrow see again,and do not kill

The spirit of love,with a perpetual dulness.

Let this sad interim like the ocean be

Which parts the shore,where two contracted new

Come daily to the banks,that,when they see

Return of love,more blest may be the view;

Else call it winter,which being full of care

Makes summer's welcome thrice more wish'd,more rare.

明天却仍会饿得发慌;

看到爱的归来,是他们心中大的企盼;

Lord of my love,to whom in vassalage

Thy merit hath my duty strongly knit,

To thee I send this written embassage,

To witness duty,not to show my wit;

Duty so great which wit so poor as mine

May make seem bare,in wanting words to show it,

But that I hope some good conceit of thine

In thy soul's thought,all naked,will bestow it;

Till whatever star that guides my moving

Points on me graciously with fair aspect

And puts apparel on my tatter'd loving,

To show me worthy of thy sweet respect:

Then may I dare to boast how I do love thee;

Till then not show my head where thou mayst prove me.

他是在履行职责,而非卖弄才华;

难免会表达空洞,词不达意;

但愿你的慧心让我赤裸的语言重生光彩;

那时,我才敢夸耀我的爱恋;
